What to engrave on a leather desk mat: 7 ideas and where to place them

The rules first

On a Deskhide pad the text is embossed straight into the leather, with no paint and no plate. It leaves a permanent relief that develops a patina together with the leather around it, so after a year it stands out more than on day one. Three rules apply:

  • Initials of 1–2 characters are engraved for free.
  • A custom text of 3–10 characters costs €13. A space counts as a character.
  • The position is one of six, and the configurator previews it on the pad.

Shorter is almost always better. The embossing should read as a detail you notice up close, not as a slogan on a tote bag.

7 ideas for what to engrave

1. Initials

The classic that never dates and costs nothing. Two letters in the bottom right corner make the pad yours without drawing attention. If you are choosing a gift and are unsure, initials are the choice you cannot get wrong.

2. A three-letter monogram

First name, middle name, surname, or the surname in the middle. Three letters look more formal than two and suit a large mat in an office. They fall into the paid text, but €13 for a lifelong signature is worth it.

3. A date

A wedding, a first day in a new job, a graduation, a child’s birth, or the day you opened the company together. A date like 12.6.2026 is nine characters and fits exactly. It looks best bottom centre, where it reads like the signature on a letter.

4. A nickname

The name only the family or the team uses. More personal than initials, and the only person who understands it is the one who got the pad. It belongs in a corner rather than the centre.

5. A single word

CALM, FOCUS, THANKS, DONE. A word that fits the person or reminds them of something each time they look at the desk. It works best in capitals and short; long words get lost on the pad.

6. A child’s or partner’s name

A reminder of who you get up for in the morning. Discreet, but present every time you look at the desk. Short names fit the ten-character rule even as a diminutive.

7. A team or project code

A farewell gift for a colleague, or for the whole team after a finished project. The project name, an internal abbreviation or the year you pulled it off together. For companies we make pads with each recipient’s initials; details are on the corporate gifts page.

Where to place the engraving

The position changes the character of the whole pad more than you would think. Corners are discreet and elegant, the bottom centre reads as a signature, the top edge stays visible even behind a keyboard.

Six engraving positions on a leather pad: top left, top middle, top right, bottom left, bottom middle, bottom right

The six positions you can pick in the configurator. Initials most often go bottom right; a date or a word bottom centre.

A few practical notes:

  • Bottom right sits under a right-hander’s wrist, so the embossing smooths and gains a sheen fastest there; many people like that, because it shows the pad is lived with.
  • Bottom left stays clear for right-handers and the embossing keeps its crisp edges longer. Left-handers have it the other way round.
  • Bottom centre is the spot for a date or a word; on the 80 × 45 cm mat it sits exactly between the keyboard and the edge of the desk.
  • The top edge stays visible even when the pad is covered with things; it suits a boss with a monitor and papers on the desk.

What else to consider before ordering

Check the text twice. An engraved pad is made to your specification, so it cannot be returned or exchanged. A typo in the initials cannot be fixed.

Think about how the leather ages. The embossing softens and gains a sheen where it is touched often and stays crisper where it is not. Neither is a flaw; we write more about it in the post on leather patina.

Choose the colour by contrast. On Cognac the embossing stands out most, because the light leather darkens in the relief. On Black it is the most subtle, visible mainly in raking light, which many people prefer.

Once you have chosen the text, enter it in the configurator on the leather desk mat or leather mouse pad page and pick a position. You see the preview straight away, and we dispatch within 2–3 business days.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can be engraved on the pad?

Initials of 1–2 characters are engraved for free; a custom text of 3–10 characters costs €13. Spaces count as characters.

Does engraving on leather last?

Yes. Embossing into full-grain leather is permanent, and as the leather around it develops a patina it becomes even more pronounced.

Can an engraved pad be returned?

No. An engraved pad is made to your specification, so the right of withdrawal does not apply. Please check the text before you order.
