Leather Desk Mat 80 × 45 cm

A desk mat made of real leather, not leatherette

We use full-grain cowhide from European tanneries: the top layer of the hide with its natural grain left uncovered. That is why no two mats look the same, with fine veins, slight shifts in tone and a texture you can feel. The surface is neither lacquered nor coated in plastic, so the leather breathes, feels warm under your wrists and develops a patina over time instead of scuffs.

The underside is suede, which is gentle on the desktop and keeps the mat in place, and the mat is stitched around the edge so it holds its shape. Our post from the workshop shows how a mat is made.

What fits on 80 × 45 cm

Eighty centimetres across and forty-five deep cover the working area of an ordinary desk. A keyboard and a mouse sit side by side with room to move, with space left for an open laptop and a notebook. The mat pulls the desk together into one calm surface, softens the sound of typing and protects the desktop from laptop feet and coffee mugs.

For the mouse, leather behaves much like a good cloth pad: optical and laser sensors track the fine grain accurately, with slightly more resistance than a gaming speed pad. The mat also makes a fine writing pad: paper does not slide on it and a pen writes softly instead of scratching on bare wood.

Three colours, your initials for free

Choose Cognac (a warm tan that develops the richest patina), Dark Brown (deep chocolate) or Black (the most timeless). All three are the same leather, dyed differently.

Initials of one or two characters are engraved for free; a custom text of 3–10 characters costs €13. Pick one of six positions, from a discreet corner to the middle of the bottom edge. Care and patina

Wipe the mat with a dry or slightly damp cloth once a week, and apply a colourless leather balm every few months to keep it supple. Keep it out of direct sun and standing water, and blot spills rather than rubbing them. The spots you touch most will darken and soften with time: that is patina, the mark of real leather, and the mat looks better after a year than on day one.
